'What Are We Fighting For?' New Poems About War, by Brian Moses and Roger Stevens

What Are We Fighting For? New Poems About War - Illustration by Nicola L Robinson

Last year I had the pleasure of working with Tracey Ridgewell at Macmillan Children's Books illustrating cover art and pen and ink vignettes for 'What Are We Fighting For?' 'New Poems About War', by Brian Moses and Roger Stevens. Today (30th January 2014) is publication day, and so I'd like to share a few more pictures from the project with you...

What Are We Fighting For? New Poems About War - Illustration by Nicola L Robinson

This was a thoroughly enjoyable project about a very serious and important topic, and I was very pleased to be commissioned for it. As always I enjoyed being able to read all text - in this case poems- before illustrating and I am very pleased with the final results, this is the first poetry book I have illustrated and I don't often get the opportunity to work in pen and ink... in all I produced 50 pen and ink illustrations to illustrate the poems, including small spot illustrations, larger vignettes and also decorative borders of barbed wire, bullets and shells and poppies. I also did the hand lettering on the cover.

Here are a few of my favourite illustrations I did for the book -

From the Pan Macmillan website -

'A brilliant collection of brand new poems about war for younger readers.

What Are We Fighting For? explores the concept of war in a brilliantly accessible way for younger readers. Fascinating and moving in equal measure, there are poems about incredibly brave dogs, cats and pigeons; the Christmas truce of WWI when soldiers played football in No Man’s Land; poems about rationing and what it was like to be an evacuee, poems about modern warfare and the reality of war today; plus lots of amazing true historical facts.

This cross-curricular poetry book is a brilliant way to get young readers thinking about both the historical and philosophical aspects of war.'
