Snow men or snow monsters for Christmas.

I like snow. I don't like the travel chaos and other nasty side effects, but all in all, I like snow. I like making footprints across the garden before anyone else does, and hearing the crunchy sound it makes.

I built my first snowman when I was very small, I built it with my mum and we compacted the snow until it was solid, more like an ice man and he lasted for a very long time after the rest of the snow had melted.
These snow monsters will never melt, drawn in pen and ink while pondering if we will have another white Christmas this year?

Note their stylish winter knitwear.

The Wizard of Oz - Pop Up Book, Illustrated by Nicola L Robinson - published by Tango books

3D Cover of The Wizard of Oz, illustrated by me, published by Tango Books

I've been looking forward to showing you this, and now it is finally published I can! The Wizard of Oz, a Pop Up book, illustrated by me and published by the ingenious Tango Books.

I began by reading the original book by the great L Frank Baum, and absolutely loved it, so wonderfully dark and imaginative, it was a lot of fun to illustrate.

A lot of time and work went into this one, it has a 3D cover, and 4 detailed Pop Up scenes throughout the text (abridged from the original).
Each illustrated pop up scene is designed like a miniature theatre, with an outer frame and pull flap 'doors', which when opened reveal the pop up scene inside.

Click on the photo's to see them a bit larger-
The outer frame and doors of the pop up - Dorothy's house meets the Cyclone

Inside- The pop up theatre! See the tiny feet sicking out under the house
Down the Yellow Brick road...
The Emerald City! So very many tiny windows...

Part of the Emerald city, background of the Pop Up
One of my favourites.

The great and terrible wizard.... in the back right you'll spot a monster!
The shoes are silver in the book, not red, that was for Technicolour.

It wasn't a dream either, in the book it is real.
The Wizard of Oz has been particularly tricky to photograph, you really need to get hold of a copy to fully appreciate it's workings...

I also illustrated a number of smaller 'vignettes' which illustrate the rest of the text-

One of my favourites, from The Wizard of Oz.
The Wizard of Oz is available in bookshops in the UK published by Tango Books, and is also in the USA (Insight Editions) and France (Mango Jeunesse).

Here is a video of the French version-

Monster Fish Illustration! Grrrr (and surprised Largemouth Bass)

Monster Fish illustration by Nicola L Robinson all rights reserved.
A bit of a fun illustration today, I drew this one with my Dad in mind, who amongst many other things is a keen fisherman, but he wont have caught one like this before...

This is the Monster Fish, he isn't the work of a trickster taxidermist, but a really hairy monster fish, with three eyes. He isn't part of the well known and even uglier angler fish family either, he has three eyes, the third eye being used like a periscope allowing him to swim close to the surface of the water and have a look around.

He is a brightly coloured beast with dense red hair which is coarse to the touch, and black stripes along his sides. The black stripes develop as the Monster Fish reaches maturity, but the row of horns and tusk like teeth are there from birth.

Keep an eye out for him if you go swimming in the sea, he will steal your swimming trunks first, then maybe chew on your leg if he is hungry.

Silver Award for Self Promotion at Images 36 Best of British Illustration

Wow, well, I can announce I had a fantastic time at the Images 36 preview and awards ceremony earlier this week at Somerset House, I also took home the Silver Award for self promotion for my illustration 'Downtown'. I'm absolutely thrilled!
Downtown, on the wall in the Images 36 Show

Me, crouching next to my illustration (it is hung quite low down on the wall)
It has been a long time since I exhibited so it was fantastic to see my work in the show, if you look carefully you might spot some little monsters in the bottom right corner of Downtown... haha :)

The AOI certainly know how to throw a party and there was much wine and beer flowing throughout the event, it was great to be amongst so many other illustrators, the quality of the work is really stunning and I am honoured to have been selected to be part of Images 36.

If you can get to the show do! It is currently at Somerset House from 3rd Octrober through to the 28th and will then be on tour, so keep an eye out for details-
